“Deeds Not Words: Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage”
By Sandra Sider and Pamela Weeks
By Corbin Crable
The unsung heroes of the ballot boxes, the suffragists of the early 20th century, come alive in “Deeds Not Words: Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage,” portrayed on 28 contemporary art quilts, crafted by award-winning textile artists, both women and men.
The book by Sandra Sider and Pamela Weeks recounts the history of the suffrage movement, leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on Aug. 18, 1920. The quilts, although rich in detail and stunning in appearance, display both the victories and the challenges throughout the movement, whose work is ever ongoing, even today. In addition to the female artists for whom the suffrage movement is clearly personal, male artists are included in the book as well in order to acknowledge their support of the women’s efforts. African-American suffragists and artists are also included as critical voices in the push for voting equality.
Lovers of history, quilting, and women’s rights will find this slim tome to be both informative and vividly colorful; royalties from the book are shared between the New England Quilt Museum and the Texas Quilt Museum.
